The truth is that you can sign up for a library card any month you want to, but September has been set aside to highlight the benefits of a library card. These are a few that I know from personal experience.
If you make a big event for a kid to get her own library card when she learns to read so she can independently check out her own desired books, she may find a satisfying career choice when she grows up by becoming a librarian.
A good library, like mine, may keep a running tally for you to know how much you have saved on books for the year. My tally today is $659.00, and we are not even finished with September. You might ask how that saved money might be spent. You could buy books that you want to keep permanently on your shelf at home, books from authors you admire that you would like to have signed, books as gifts for your grandchildren, books for baby gifts – you get the picture.
A library card on your key ring makes a good reminder to stop by and browse the library looking for the latest mystery, biography, historical fiction, cookbook, or other favorite genre of your choice.
And if September library card month leads you to wonder how old your library card is because you got it when your library opened its doors, you can go online and chat with your librarian. Mine answered quickly with “November 8, 2003.” That means this card will be twenty years old in a couple of months, and it’s still going strong.
So if you don’t already have a timeworn card to which you are sentimentally attached, September is a great month to go out and get one!
